About

I am Toine Schoenmaekers, an independent test manager based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Since 2018 I have worked through my own company, Toine.com B.V., and before that as a tester, test coordinator and project manager at consultancies including Polteq and SYSQA.

My work rarely starts with test cases. It starts with the question of what risk the organisation carries if something goes wrong, and what needs to be demonstrably tested before go-live. From that risk analysis I build the test strategy, set up the test phases and make sure the steering committee and programme management have an honest picture of status and quality.

In large chains I work closely with suppliers and partner organisations. That calls for a plan that holds, agreements everyone knows, and defect handling that does not stall between parties. A large part of my value sits there.

Test strategy and master test plan

From product risk analysis to a test strategy that fits the risks, the schedule and the budget, including entry and exit criteria per test phase.

Building a test organisation

Roles, governance, tooling and ways of working, also where no test function exists yet. At PME a working test organisation was in place within five months.

SIT and UAT coordination

Running system integration testing and user acceptance testing, from test preparation and data requests through to daily progress control with the test teams.

End-to-end and chain testing

Testing across system and organisational boundaries, with external suppliers and chain partners working to the same schedule.

Defect management and reporting

A defect process that works across multiple parties, and reporting a steering committee can actually decide on rather than a raw count of open findings.

Process improvement and coaching

Making teams self-sufficient in test automation and acceptance testing, so quality holds up after I leave.

Pensions and Wtp Conversion of accrued pension rights and new administration platforms under the Dutch Future Pensions Act, at AZL for Rabobank Pensioenfonds and at PME Pensioenfonds.
Government and public sector Chain-wide testing at the Dutch immigration service within the Borders and Security domain, with national police, military police and foreign affairs. Earlier Rijkswaterstaat and the Port of Amsterdam.
Media and broadcast Migration to a new broadcast management system at RTL Nederland, for both television and video on demand.
Education and publishing CMS migration and the redesign of the student and teacher portal at educational publisher ThiemeMeulenhoff.
Financial services Mortgage servicing at Stater: CRM and interfaces with external parties, including new regulatory requirements for business clients.
Retail Point of sale systems, self-checkout and handheld scanners in the Stores domain at Ahold Delhaize.
Telecom and e-commerce Marketing and e-commerce projects for Dutch Railways and KPN, and earlier e-commerce at LM Maaseik.
High tech and security Identity and access management at NXP, up to and including the high-secure environment.

Selected assignments

  • AZL / Rabobank Pensioenfonds, Test Manager

    Pension reform transition and conversion to a new administration platform. Running SIT and UAT with twenty testers, including planning, supplier management and reporting to programme management, steering committee and client.

  • PME Pensioenfonds, Test Manager

    Delivery of a new pension administration system and preparation for the conversion of accrued rights. A working test organisation in place within five months, with strategy, test plans, risk analyses and governance.

  • ThiemeMeulenhoff, Test Manager

    CMS migration, a new corporate website and the redesign of the eDition portal. The migrations went live without disruption; eDition runs daily for thousands of students and teachers.

  • Immigration and Naturalisation Service, Test Coordinator

    Chain-wide testing of Schengen, entry-exit and visa systems. Test execution stayed in step with the European release calendar and chain partners knew what was expected of them and when.

  • Stater, Business Analyst and Test Coordinator

    CRM projects and interfaces with external parties. During a far-reaching database change, business clients met new regulatory requirements on time.

  • Ahold Delhaize, Test Coordinator

    Point of sale systems, self-checkout and handheld scanners. Remote access to test tills was arranged when covid made physical access impossible, so testing carried on.

  • RTL Nederland, Test Manager

    Test strategy and planning for the migration to a new broadcast management system, with coverage of thousands of use cases, chain testing and parallel running.

  • Earlier roles

    Senior software tester at Polteq (NXP), project manager at Netwinst (Dutch Railways, KPN), tester and business analyst at SYSQA (Port of Amsterdam, Rijkswaterstaat), Scrum Master at StartMobi and e-commerce at LM Maaseik.
